Artist Bio

All About Steve Brown

I started my artistic journey as a small child, forever drawing and painting everything and anything.

After secondary school I attended college and studied Fine Art, Art History and Photography. Furthering my artistic development, depth of understanding and exposure to mixed media. Unable to self fund further development, I entered healthcare, where my caring and creative nature gifted me the ability to connect with others in need.

After many years in healthcare, 10 of which were Emergency Ambulance Service, I had cumulative traumatic experiences and was encouraged by my wife to get back into art again and undertook a Diploma in Children's illustration, returning to my artistic journey via another avenue and have been a Professional Children's Book Illustrator for the past 11 years.

In recent years the desire to create art has become an unyielding obligation to myself to explore the inner mechanism of my creative consciousness. It is a cathartic outlet for me emotionally and spiritually.

My art is a highly-personal reflection of myself.

I paint portraits in oils, acrylics, and spray paint, capturing both the iconic and the intimate aspects of human experience. My work spans from pop culture portraits—depicting movie stars, musicians, and cinematic moments—into more personal, introspective pieces that reflect my own struggles with mental health and childhood trauma.

In my pop culture portraits, I incorporate references from the subjects’ artistic mediums, blending elements from film, music, and performance directly into the paintings. This allows me to explore the ways in which these larger-than-life figures influence our perceptions of identity and fame, while also reflecting on the fragility and complexity of their public personas.

On the other side of my practice, I create portraits that delve deeply into the emotional and psychological realms. These works speak to the internal struggles many of us face—especially in terms of mental health. Through my own personal experience, I explore the ways we often choose to show only certain aspects of ourselves, keeping others hidden away from view. These pieces examine the dichotomy between public identity and private pain, capturing moments of stillness, vulnerability, and subtle peace within.

Portraiture, above all, is my chosen medium because it allows me to create emotion through a gaze, an expression, or a fleeting moment of connection. My struggles with mental health and the impact of my own childhood experiences drive me to express these emotions on canvas. I hope my work will encourage open conversations—particularly among men—about mental health, vulnerability, and the beauty of embracing one’s full, unguarded self.

In all of my portraits, I seek to share the inherent beauty of the individual in all its complexity, acknowledging both the light and the shadow within us all.

I am currently collaborating with The Brighton Box Gallery in Brighton and Art and Space Gallery in Tenterden, Kent.
